Bartlett Regional Hospital's laboratory, accredited by the College of American Pathologists, is a clinical laboratory with state-of-the-art analytical instruments. Norman Thompson, MD, who is board-certified in clinical and anatomical pathology, serves as the medical director.
In keeping with a commitment to accuracy and precision, the laboratory must run numerous quality-control procedures as well as perform daily, weekly and monthly maintenance according to exacting specifications established by regulatory agencies.
This 24-hour laboratory performs routine testing between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Routine testing is done on a first-come, first-served basis during these regular business hours. If a physician feels that special circumstances require testing during the off hours or on holidays, arrangements can be made for that testing. Since the laboratory has minimal staffing during off hours, priority is given to emergency and inpatient testing.
All testing requires written orders from a healthcare professional. Doctors' orders may be faxed to 907.796.8466 or brought to the laboratory at the time of service. Bartlett Regional Hospital's laboratory performs a wide variety of tests locally with results reaching the physician within the same or next day. Tests not frequently requested are forwarded to a reference lab, usually in Seattle. Results of reference tests are often available within 1 to 3 days.
Although cholesterol, triglyceride and blood sugar give more accurate results when performed after fasting (one may not eat anything for 8 to 12 hours before testing but should continue drinking water), most tests do not require fasting and can be collected at a patient's convenience between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., weekdays.
Patients need to call the lab at 907.796.8860 to schedule glucose tolerance tests (for diabetes or hypoglycemia), paternity testing, urine drug screen collection, bone marrow donation screenings, sweat chlorides and 24-hour urine collections. These tests require specific instructions.
