What our patients say about us

Excerpts from recent patient feedback:

“Thank you all for taking such good care of [name withheld], and for answering all my questions. Perhaps you could buy flowers or a special treat for all to enjoy.”

“No words can express my love and gratitude to the staff here at Bartlett for the care and concern given to me and my family during this catastrophic time away from home. Everyone has been so kind and friendly helping us in many small ways as well as the big issues.
To those whom I have had contact with and those behind the scenes who helped with my care I give a big hug and thank you. You are all special people and should be proud of yourselves and your facility. May God bless you all.”

“Dear 3rd Floor Hospital Staff, Thank you so much for taking such good care of [name withheld]. You relieved considerable anxiety for us and made our stay here very pleasant (as pleasant as a hospital stay can be). He had outstanding care!”

“Thank you all for your incredibly wonderful care while I was here…
To all my nurses – Sarah, Chris, Liz, Saluud, Candace, and Deena
To all my CNAs – Idalia and Carol
To my respiratory therapists – Chris, Chuck, David, Cherie, and Cynthia
To my doctors – Dr. Smith and Dr. Haddock
And all the other who have helped me so much, I’m very grateful for all your wonderful care and support in helping me get well. I know I’m on the road to recovery and deeply appreciate all you have done. I’ll come back and visit Juneau in better health one day. I wish you all a blessed rest of the summer.”

“Dear Mr. Morrow,
I recently had occasion to visit your hospital as a patient from the cruise ship Norwegian Pearl. What started out as a very daunting experience to say the least, due to a pronounced cardiac episode, was made easier and more comforting thanks to the efforts of your hospital staff.
If I do not name all of the people I came into contact with, please excuse me. What I do remember is their professionalism, compassion and caring way they took care of me and especially my wife, as we were a very long way from home, in unfamiliar surroundings.
[My wife] and I especially want to thank Tammy Murphy your social worker who went that extra mile in looking after us and seeing that all of our needs were taken care of.
My nurses, Kim and Liesl, who are sweethearts, were very caring and obviously dedicated to their chosen field. Dr. Priscilla Valentine who looked after my care was exceptional with her skills as a physician and wonderful with her caring bedside manner.
Please pass our heartfelt thanks to all. We are already making plans to return to Alaska to finish our cruise. As an aside, [My wife] feels that Juneau is a "mystical and healing place" and Juneau will be a must stop for us as we want to see all of our newfound friends in a healthier way.”

“I have always received excellent care at BRH.
I want to commend everyone in Diagnostic Imaging for their excellent service to me and their community (Today I had an MRI, ultrasound, X-ray and CT scan.)”

“I went to the ER with lots of abdominal pain, for which I was treated and admitted for a total period of close to 48 hours. During some of that time I was on pain medication and I do not recall some of the events or interactions with staff clearly, but overall I am impressed with your staff and grateful to them for the care they provided.
The food was good, and served cheerfully. I don't remember everyone's name, but I appreciate the CNA's -- Mark and Iris, and the RN's -- Deborah and Brian among them, that looked after me so well. There were other nursing staff who I remember well and to whom I am grateful for their concern and professional care, but I don't know their names.
Dr. Urata, my primary care physician, and his colleague Dr. Welling (who already had a very busy afternoon with patients but stepped in to help when he was needed) were both there and were great, as usual.
They are excellent doctors, very deserving of the confidence our family has in them. I also owe a debt of gratitude, and maybe an apology, to Dr. Gruchacz, the surgeon that came into the ER and worked so hard to figure out what was wrong with me and render aid, at the point in my stay when I was the least lucid and cooperative. In many hospital ER's one on one care from a surgeon is only available in the operating room, I know. I was pretty out of it but I think it was her, or maybe one of the nurses, who was able to get me a much-needed CT scan on really short notice.
Finally, there has been coverage in the press recently about the spread of MSRA and other stuff to patients at hospitals through IV's and blood draws, and how it is almost entirely preventable by hand washing and the use of cleansing swabs, by staff, when inserting and removing tubes and needles from patients. I noticed that most of them time these preventative steps were used by staff that I came in contact with, and that is reassuring.
We are really lucky to have a facility like Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau, and I'm writing to let you know that I don't take BRH or the people who work there for granted. Thanks,”

“Your people and staff were incredible, So helpful. We would have had a hard time without so much help and knowledgeable people. Your facility is wonderful too. The food service was great and the cleaning staff was very courteous.
I am terrible with names so I can’t name everyone, but I didn’t encounter a single bad attitude. Thank you so much.”

“Dear Sir or Madam, I find the hospital wards in the new division laid out very well, the old section is neat and tidy also.
The staff and doctors are quite happy in their professional work in this hospital, which is hard to find in the era.
The cafeteria is run quite good, nice views for most patients which is good for them, in nice rooms looking out the hilly environment excellent.
My wife was in the top floor after contracting a flu virus from Diamond Princess. The staff looked after her very well…couldn’t do enough.”

“The staff was outstanding with a potentially exceptionally difficult “special needs” client. They were kind, understanding, and worked well with the patient’s caregiver. The hospital staff adjusted to the patient’s needs and formed a highly successful plan. They demonstrated flexibility, compassion, and understanding.
The pre-op nurse, Laura, took the time to truly listen to the care-giver as she described the client’s likely responses to being in the hospital. Lena, the nurse manager, stayed with the patient throughout her stay. She was exceptional and her approach kept the patient from becoming distressed or combative.”

“I had arthroscopic knee surgery and was in short stay. Every staff member we encountered was warm and caring and very professional. Special thanks to Lena Sorenson and nurse Ching.”

“I wish to inform Sabrina’s direct supervisor and management of Bartlett that I am exceptionally pleased with the service I received at Bartlett.
Sabrina was extraordinarily efficient which expedited the time I had to spend during my appointment. Actually, this is the most favorable experience I have had with any medical facility. She’s efficient at her job, kind and personable!”

“I had had two recent surgeries at BRH and have received excellent care from staff and medical personnel”

“My experience in the short term stay unit yesterday was a quality experience from the time I entered the unit until the time I left.
I was assigned to Nurse Maureen who was kind, caring, thorough, and obviously a quality care person of humor and attendant to patient comfort. While waiting for my procedure, I experienced the friendliness of all the staff as they tended to their business. It was a cheerful staff. Dr. Joseph Roth, who performed my procedure, was kind, warm and obviously professional and competent, as were the anesthesiologists.
Sometimes, I don’t take time to express appreciation. This form was helpful and handy to encourage my response. Please thank the short term unit.”

“Thank you so much for not just doing your job, but going above and beyond. The notebook you provide answers so many questions and keeps track of needed details. The wealth of knowledge that you give orally and in books and such give information so often before the question even comes up. Your caring and compassion and encouragement are always appreciated.
Thank you so much for making this whole infusion process as painless, easy, and encouraging as you do. I hope to never need to come back to infusion, but I will remember you happily.”

“The nursing service was excellent as well as the doctor looking in on my wounds. The PT and OT were very efficient in getting my therapy for increasing my mobility. In general, the stay at Bartlett was a good choice for the operation. I am grateful that I had a choice. Dr. Gross was particularly careful in seeing that my recovery was on track. All the nurses and CNAs were always in good spirits which hastened my recovery. Food was particularly good, my apologies for not having a better appetite.”

“Excellent staff – Caring, attentive and kind.
I feel that the staff tired had to help make our stay here very comfortable. Thank you!
This is my third baby at Bartlett Hospital. We have always been impressed and comforted by the professionalism and high quality care this OB team ha shown us. What a dynamic team! They work will together and complement each other. We would be sad to see one person end their shift and them be surprised that the next person was just as capable and wonderful to us! Marlowe and Sara (the dynamic duo) checked us in and took care of us the first day – (we could not believe they were “new” to the team.) They had the same confidence and abilities of veterans. The same with Ami R. She was professional and all over it! Kasia Spengler has taken care of us during all three stays and she is amazing.
We were so happy to see most of the team from [our child’s] birth still here – Kasia, MJ, Sandy, Karen, Agnes, Terri, Sara, Ami, Angela, Claudia, and Margo.
We enjoyed having Maria for the first time, she was so nurturing and has a wonderful bedside manner.
Sandy ensured that I got the rest I needed on my last night. We felt like our own family was taking care of us.
It was a wonderful stay and we really appreciate all the hard work and pride that these women put into their jobs.
Anna Lyn from food service – Thank you! I hope I did not foret anyone -- because this team deserses to be recognized!"

“Dear Bartlett Managers, Board of Directors, Staff of Bartlett Regional Hospital,
Today I went to visit a friend of mine in ICU.  The woman at front desk told me she was still in ICU.  I went to get my friend’s sister so we both can visit.  At ICU we were told that my friend had already gone home!
So, we tried to find our way back to where I parked my car – in back of the hospital.  We were hopelessly lost in the hospital.  We saw a man in a blue outfit and he patiently took us to the back door.  I lost my plastic rain hat in one of the halls.  He told us to sit and wait while he went back to look for the rain hat.
In ten minutes, he came running back with my rain hat!  I am so delighted to get my rain hat back besides being shown the correct way to get out of the maze.
I asked his name so I can write a letter of commendation and also to tell the hospital how Armando went beyond his call of duty so kindly and gently.  We are in our eighties.
There should be a map of all the floors for people like me, who have a lousy sense of direction.  I thank God for people like Armando.”

“I really felt that my nurse Joan went the extra mile in helping me salvage my scheduled procedure. We had invested a lot of time and expense to come to Juneau from Haines for the pre-op appointment, prep, procedure, etc. It meant a great deal not to have to waste all that. Plus, to be treated with dignity and concern, realizing it meant the short stay surgery unit having to adjust its schedule on my behalf. I’m truly grateful for the care I received.”

“The staff of nurses in the same day surgery unit are the best I have seen…”

“Excellent staff…wonderful…very caring…perfect care.”

“The care and service here is outstanding! Compared to my recent experience in Portland when I was on trip, the care was like night and day. Halle and Leslie are top notch and really the whole department is very knowledgeable, accommodating, and great to work with. Thank you for everything. I have a great appreciation for the PT department.”

Good job. Thanks!”

I would like to take the time to thank everyone at Bartlett for the care my young son received while in the hospital. He was a sick little boy and we are from out of town and the staff went out of their way to help and make us feel comfortable. Charlie, one of my son’s nurses helped us get transferred to the Bartlett House and even made my ice tea in the room since I couldn’t leave. All the nurses made sure that we were comfortable and had everything to help my son recover. Thank you all very much.”

Staff and services are all very professional and courteous. You are greatly appreciated! Thanks for everything.”

I had outpatient surgery recently and I was treated so kindly. The young lady in the admitting office was kind and efficient. The short stay staff was really nice and efficient too. Doctor Dostal was wonderful, as everyone had told me he was great. Two days afterwards, the Dr’s nurse called to see how I was doing, then the hospital nurse from short stay called to check on me. This personal caring meant so much to me. I am so pleased with the care I received.”

“Excellent nursing and medical care in Emergency and CCU.”

Tammy from case management was so helpful and patient recently as I struggled to obtain a travel authorization from Medicaid. She was very positive and good-humored throughout my numerous phone calls! What an asset to Bartlett!"

Once again, thank you for taking an otherwise miserable situation and making it as comfortable as possible. I would particularly like to thank three individuals. Julie, the nurse in the medical/surgery department was wonderful. She’s a true professional with such a good attitude with regard to patient care. Idalia, the CNA in the same department, was also great. She too was willing to help with a great attitude to boot. Finally, Maike was also wonderful. She was very helpful with regard to my needs and nice beyond words. These three individuals are true assets to Bartlett. Thank you!”

“The nurse Geri in short stay was very nice and professional…made my stay comfortable. Particularly like Dr. Palmer. He has a good bedside manner and always answers my questions fully. It is nice dealing with the entire staff at Bartlett…”

Incredible care – everyone was nice, helpful, and accessible. I felt really comfortable with everyone and felt well-taken care of. Thank you for having the variety of juices available as well as Jello, applesauce, yogurt, etc. Thanks for the attention given my husband – I felt like you made him part of the team. I can’t say thank you enough for the care given and most likely saving our son’s life. Very nice room…large and lots of seating char that turns into a bed, bathroom with shower and tub, black out window blinds, didn’t hear noise from the parking lot.”

I have only been here a couple of times, but have found all staff to be helpful, friendly, and give me as much information as possible regarding my current sitation.”

“I would like to say how grateful I am for the wonderful care my dad received while at Bartlett. He was flown her from Haines and stayed ten days. Everyone from the nurses to the CNAs were great. The CNAs went beyond their duty… Agnes from OB was with him the most and how lucky he was! She was outstanding and so caring. Also Maria Salud and Charlie - nurses - wonderful- I can't remember all their names but thank you -- the case workers were very helpful finding a place for his rehab and nursing. Tammy - Thank you. I have no complaints except for his doctor -- not impressed -- I would not have her again.”

I recently gave birth to my first child. My husband and I felt we received excellent care while we were in the hospital. It started with the kind security guard getting us a wheelchair and ended with a helpful CNA that assisted us to the car. Overall, it was a very good experience (despite labor) that left us pleased that we chose Bartlett. Please let Claudia know what an excellent nurse she is, that Dr. Hernandez is an extremely qualified physician who went above and beyond for us, and how we appreciated Dr. Connor for his speed in assisting our pain and how friendly he was with follow-up. The room was quiet, clean, and great for use for laboring. Thank you so much to everyone!”

We arrived in the ER about 8:30 pm and were seen, treated, and released by 10:30 pm which was a vast improvement over our previous visit. I have had the privilege of working with Rose Lawhorne many times and always found her to be engaging and open to new ideas. We were fortunate enough to have her as our nurse during our visit and I find her to be just as wonderful in patient care. Her and Dr. McPherson took extra time to make my daughter comfortable and at ease and that made her whole experience painless. I appreciate the patient involvement that they both showed and wanted to share my gratitude. The care shown during our visit makes me proud to work at Bartlett.”

A recent recurrence of lymphodemia required me to visit Denice McPherson. The quality of care and compassion and expertise she brings to patients like me is outstanding. She called my primary care physician to make sure they could see me that day and called a few days later to make sure all was well and answered questions. A follow-up visit to refresh my “wrapping” skills was very valuable and I always come away with the latest on lymphodemia care. I honestly don’t think I could continue living in Juneau without Denice and the specialty care I get from her.”
